The Board of Stewardship
Stewardship is responsible for the encouragement of good stewardship practices when it comes to our time, talent, and treasure, and this not just for our individual stewardship but also for our corporate stewardship. So we are going to be getting out 2016 finances reviewed from an outside source. So last year a number of issues came up outside of our own congregation that prompted us to look at what we can do to better support the many volunteers that help with our finances. As you know the past couple of years we had divvied up the complicated Treasurer’s duties among a number of individuals to make the work load lighter. And it certainly did, however it made communication and therefore reporting more cumbersome. So we certainly want to better support our volunteers. There were issues outside our congregation as well. For example, the reported bankruptcy of the Church Extension Fund of the ABC District of the Lutheran Church Canada, and some improprieties reported in a few sister congregations in LCC. We also had our insurance company insisting that we needed to include “Officer and Director Liability Insurance” in our insurance policy, and thus needed to provide a financial audit. So needless to say the Board of Stewardship and Parish Planning Council looked into all of this, received expert advice, and concluded that we don’t need the extra insurance because of the way decisions are made in our congregation. The Voter’s Assembly decides how money is spent and gives direction to the Parish Planning Council (the Directors). We did think it was a good idea to have a financial review since we had not had an outside review in a very long time. This is called an Engagement Review and would cost the church around $3,000 to $5,000. ($10,000 for a full audit, $2,000 for a simple reading of the books) So think of this a middle of the road review. This would give us a level of accountability, which would also support and protect our volunteers, and give us a good starting place to move forward from.
